The Rabbis’ March on Washington - October 6, 1943 In the middle of World War II, about 300 rabbis marched on Washington to plead for Jews still trapped under Nazi rule. The Emergency Committee to Save the Jewish People of Europe had organized the march. On the Capitol steps they read a petition asking the wartime Allies to open doors for refugees in Allied and neutral countries and in Palestine, and to create a special agency to rescue them. Hearst Metrotone filmed the day. In the published newsreel, Rabbi Wolf Gold stands at a microphone beside Dr. J. H. Gordon and addresses the gathering, with sound. The unpublished stretch looks down the Capitol steps: rabbis fill the staircase in black hats, the Washington Monument in the distance. The cameraman’s dope sheet for that shot is a card stamped “NOT TO BE USED.” Later Rabbi Eliezer Silver reads from a thick folder while Vice President Henry Wallace listens. Beside them, Rabbi Aaron Burack holds the papers. That evening four of the delegation carried the petition to the White House. 🎥 Film: Hearst Metrotone News, Washington, D.C., October 6, 1943 Full story: jewishreels.com/posts/washington-1943-rabbis-march.html #Jewish #worldwar2 #History #jewishhistory #holocaust
