@nikkaloola: Yesterday Georgie Dent, CEO of @The Parenthood, gave a speech at the National Press Club. She laid out the real cost of raising a family in Australia, and it's a lot. It costs around $17,800 a year to raise one child. Over the past 20 years, the cost of raising a family has gone up 134%, while family income has risen just 102%. Kids get 12 weeks of school holidays, but working parents get four weeks of leave, which leaves hundreds of hours of care to find every year. As Georgie put it, our workplaces and schools still assume there's a "spare adult" at home to cover the gap. Usually it's mum, and mothers' earnings drop 55% in the five years after having a baby. Every time this comes up, the response is the same: "you chose to have children." It's a simple answer, and it's moot. Society quite literally depends on people having children, so if you're part of society, you're affected by whether people can afford to have them. When raising kids becomes unaffordable, people stop having them. Australia's birth rate has dropped 25% since 2008, and Georgie says much of that is about affordability, not wanting fewer kids. That's a society problem, not a parenting one. By 2063, the number of Australians over 65 will more than double. Fewer kids today means fewer workers, fewer taxpayers funding hospitals and aged care, and staff shortages in everything from childcare to your local GP. Her ask is simple: treat childcare and paid parental leave like roads and hospitals. Infrastructure we all fund because we all benefit. In her words, "It's not a personal failure. It's a policy failure." #childcarecosts #costofliving #workingparents #birthrate #australianmums

We thought we could afford kids. Then we had a disabled child, and cost of living sky rocketed and I can’t work as I care for my child. All of a sudden a bright prosperous future went south and we need help. And no we don’t need more childcare subsidy. We need government payments for carers and families to increase and for it to be possible to survive on 1 income again.

The world has enough people. Immigration can fill these gaps. We cannot have an infinitely growing population on a planet with finite resources.

I am in the process of updating our mortgage to get a better rate and our MONTHLY expenses have increased by $1k per month in 2 years. That includes us budgeting and actively cutting back on non essential. Going out for dinner? What’s that? Streaming services? Gone? So when I was pregnant I had an extra $12k a year! That’s only going on essentials.

l remember when my kids were little $150 used to fill the trolley for the week, now with 3 teens the same amount of money barley covers the bottom of the trolley and might last 3 days.

it crazy in a society to have these views ...that's like saying if you get into a car accident then no ndis or medical needs for you , you chose to drive. were in society a collective to work together

I guarantee the Venn diagram of people saying “you should’ve known how expensive it is to raise kids blah blah blah”, boomers, and the people who are against migration, is a circle. Aging population and no support for families? We’re in trouble.

I get your point, but you are using it to try and justify getting more money to look after your children, what about couples like us who couldn’t have children, after 45 years of paying taxes do we suddenly get a big rebate or perhaps a better pension?

The maths on the hour gaps between annual leave (even with two parents which isn't the situation for everyone) and school holidays that was called out blew my mind. It's one thing to feel it and another to see it quantified.

💯 so I know some Chinese people who said China is suffering so bad right now because of their aging population and no young people due to the one child policy that was in place for so long. Literally teachers needing to find new work because there is no one to teach 🙈

There will be zero inheritance, because all of those funds will be used on aged care. Aged care know this and are squeezing every dollar possible.

100% we almost need state/federal run grocery stores too for basics at a set cost. Fair payment for farmers, no profit for the gov. The basics should be accessible and affordable for everyone regardless of if you work or don’t

Think ppl who had children should get a tax reduction after a certain age.. I mean it kinda sounds counter productive but I assume more migration will be the solution inevitably considering that’s the only other option to balance the low birth rates..

I say to the people who say ‘well if you can’t afford children/can’t afford to stay home with them then don’t have them’. Ok, so if that’s your point of view, think about this. If all mothers were to stay home that’s a huge loss for the workforce/economy, increases welfare use, significantly reduced options/financial safety for women, a dangerous drop in birth rates and thinking towards the future, if people for the majority stop having children, who’s going to fill the workforce in the future? What will happen to the economy and infrastructure if there’s significantly reduced numbers to do jobs? It’s not the parents financially struggling to blame, it’s the fact that in 2026 the cost of living has increased way higher than people’s wages have. A lot of people had children when it was affordable and now, it no longer is.
