There is a Venn diagram floating around of puppets, muppets, and The Muppets. All muppets are puppets, but not all muppets are members of The Muppets. But all Muppets are muppets and puppets.

All that and you left out the fact that Muppet is derived from Moppet + Puppet, to mean they were hairy puppets (2/3rds of all Muppets are hairy or have frizzy, kinky or fuzzy fur/felt skin), as the word Moppet meant hairy, curly or kinky hair. This is confirmed further by the fact there isn't a single Muppet with smooth skin (made of non-felt).

Okay, but Disney has honestly never known exactly what to do with The Muppets. Honestly it has been a very strange and embarrassing situation, I honestly hope that sooner or later The Muppets are sold to a different company that knows what to do with them.

"creatures" was used for more realistic puppets, like dark crystal and farscape. I remember seeing a chart or something about that, dunno how the JH Co. deals with that now

Not all Muppets are muppets. Marionette + puppet = muppet. So you need hand rods. Characters like Ernie and Rowlf have two performers (one as the extra hand) and are therefore not technically muppets.
