A healthy parent is always collecting little pieces of information about you: – “She hates grapes.” – “He loves this cereal.” – “She gets overwhelmed in loud places.” Why? Because it helps them build a picture of who you are. It shows them the “foundation” they can build on and the “cracks” they can fill in. A narcissistic parent is the complete opposite. Instead of: – “She hates grapes.” It's: – “She's so difficult about food.” Instead of: – “He loves this cereal.” It's: – “I'm spending so much money on him.” Instead of: – “She gets overwhelmed in loud places.” It's: – “She always ruins things when we go out.” Why? Because they're not collecting information to understand who you are. They're collecting information to evaluate the impact you have on them. So the next time you start feeling like: “Oh, you poor thing. They forgot the foods you don't like.” Please try to remember it's actually not about the food at all.
