genuinely cannot remember a horror protagonist where almost every decision I was like "yeah that's probably what I would do in this situation"

Did I just get convinced, through a discussion about empathy, that I should watch Resident Evil? Me, a person who is CHRONICALLY AFRAID???

So many people are mad about the ending because Bryan is written and portrayed so well. There was no way that the story could end with him living, and yet it still caught people by surprise.

I also liked that they made a point to show the picture on the wall of the farmhouse showing that the woman from the car wreck and the man in the house were husband and wife it made the grotesque and violent scene of them being shot and then fusing together also sort of beautiful and human. Yes they’re a grotesque horror, but even infected, even in death they found their way back to each other and stayed together…literally.

him resolving to try and help over and over (and it keeps not working) was so good. it did such a good of making him scared but have so much forward momentum

I loved that it felt like in a video game where I would go “why do I have to solve this, couldn’t I just drive the truck through the gate? Can’t I check on the little girl first? Can I not just turn and run from this situation instead of confronting it to move forward?” And every time he did what instinctively I want to do in the turns of a video game but can’t.

Ironically I think the movie closest in my mind after watching Resident Evil was Clerks, and how it felt like we got the original ending where Dante is shot and killed at the end of the movie. I felt too much for Brian to handle that ending.

“The Johnny Depp scene was weird, I don’t know what happened there,” is ALWAYS my first thought about Tusk lol

To be kind of fair, if I was bitten then IMMEDIATELY told that I happened to be carrying part of the cure and exactly Where I needed to be to get it, I'd probably pipe down at first and see what I could get done

Funnily enough Tusk’s horror bothered me wayy less bc Justin Long was so awful of a person lol. But this Resident Evil? Much like Slither, I’ll never be able to watch it again. It was too hard. (I do think it was a much better movie than Tusk, promise)

Also I feel like the way Cregger infuses humor into his movies feels so natural? Like it doesn’t feel like “I am going to insert a joke here” it feels like the characters in the world are trying to cut the tension themselves

I LOVED how much he made the normal human call every time. You would check on the lady. You would follow the cop. You would try to take the organ to the city to help someone !!

It also shows an average person going into an unknown crazy situation and their skill set and decisions. He didn’t know about all the umbrella stuff, he originally thought he was delivering a transplant organ to a patient

Brilliant explanation how Tusk handles a level of revelry for suffering that creates discomfort for most

Austin Abrams really was perfect for this role. Like truly everything he did and said felt so authentic. Whomst among us WOULDN’T risk the elevator of death to avoid walking up 28 floors?

I love this perspective. As someone who loves horror but has a genuine hard time with gratuitous/brutal moments, I was surprised how it never felt mean

I truly love your takes, Tusk made me so viscerally uncomfortable when I watched it and I’ve never been able to put a finger on why and I really think you nailed why—it just felt so mean spirited at times.
