It is especially challenging when you come from a background of mistreatment, neglect, or abandonment. The pain caused by a parent’s failure to love and protect can feel like an impossible obstacle. However, the scripture doesn’t attach conditions to this instruction based on how "deserving" our parents may seem in our eyes. It is simply a matter of our own obedience to God. Choosing to extend honor and respect—even when the relationship is fractured—is not about condoning their behavior, but about honoring God. If you struggle to do this, take that burden to God. Forgiveness is incredibly hard to find on our own. Yet holding onto bitterness and unforgiveness will often poison our own hearts and make our own lives more difficult. I struggled with this so hard most of my adult life. Regardless of what my parents may or may not have put me through, I had to realize forgiveness was not necessarily meaning let them continue. I did love them until the end. Periodically I would try to discuss situations from the past, but they never were welcome to discussing it. I spent as much time as I could with them, and if they would bring up anything from the past, I would tell them that I’m just here to love them. I’m grateful I finally came to that conclusion.
