In 2026, he returned to the issue, again calling for at least two permanent African seats with full rights, including veto power, alongside two additional non-permanent seats, as part of wider reforms to make the UN more representative. For Ruto, the issue goes beyond Africa’s representation. He has argued that reforming the Security Council is necessary for the UN to remain relevant and credible in a changing world, rather than continuing to reflect the power structure of 1945.
