I wish I could see more stories about the Bengali community! we need to make the effort to put it out there, that’s why I wrote a play about navigating Bangladeshi identity and uncovers the silencing of women’s roles and experiences during the liberation war

Thank you for this, I don’t know why Indians are trying to gate keep south Asian culture. Like are they ok?

Can relate honestly - I’m a Sri Lankan - Moor, I doubt anyone has even heard of my ethnicity outside of my country. There’s a lot of crossovers for me in terms of North Indian culture too so I find a lot of the movie really relatable even tho I still live here. People don’t understand how diverse the South Asian region as a whole is!

REPOSTED! Everything you said is bang on! As a British born Asian with Bengali heritage, at university when I met so many international students from South Asia, the judgement and snobbery I experienced as if being ‘British Asian’ isn’t a culture in its own way. What use to baffle me is these lots took the first flight out to come to the west and want to settle here, and not understand if they end up having a family in the future, their own children would be part of the wider South Asian diaspora community and thus have a very different experience to their desi identity to them.

It’s just annoying that there’s never any diverse representations of South Asian diasporic culture. Especially when Bengali communities are one of the biggest diasporic communities outside of South Asia.

I'm half south Asian, my mum's parents were both from Sri Lanka, even within the mixed Sri lankan diaspora we have like different foods and different religions etc (and different fashions) there's some crossover and really I think everyone I know is happy that Maitreyi is giving us some kind of representation.

As a female South African film director and writer of Indian descent, honestly no one cares unless they can put a dollar amount to anything. It can't be the best story in the world, and they won't fund it. it's just the way this industry works
