I think being over 40 gives you an advantage in trading that nobody really talks about. By this point in your life, you’ve already learned that wanting something badly doesn’t give you control over the outcome. You’ve had careers, relationships, businesses, families, failures, successes and enough plans go completely differently than expected to understand that sometimes you can do everything right and still not get the result you wanted. Trading asks you to accept exactly the same thing. You can control whether you wait for your setup. You can control whether you enter when your rules tell you to. You can control your risk, your exit and whether you interfere with the trade once you’re in it. You cannot control whether that individual trade wins. I think that distinction is much easier to understand when life has already taught it to you a few hundred times. And there’s another advantage that comes with age. You’ve probably already become good at something difficult. You know what it feels like to be terrible at something before becoming competent. You understand that improvement takes repetition, that going backwards occasionally is part of learning, and that doing the boring basics properly usually matters far more than looking advanced. Those are incredibly useful qualities to bring into trading. At 40, you don’t need to become younger, faster or smarter to become a better trader. You can use the 40 years of life you’ve already lived. I give free 1-1 calls to traders over 40 who need to stop breaking their rules.
