On October 8, Ohio officials announced an indictment against Michael Perik in connection with an alleged scheme involving $20 million in funds intended for students at Eastern Gateway Community College, including federal Pell Grants and state money. Eastern Gateway offered a "Free College Benefit" program for union members, their families, and even their friends. Enrollment exploded from 8,500 students to more than 60,000. Companies controlled by Michael Perik allegedly gained improper control over enrollment, attendance verification, and financial aid processes. Prosecutors allege millions in education funding were improperly diverted through the operation. And here's where it gets interesting for Rhode Island. Michael Perik has donated more than $105,000 to political candidates, mostly Democrats, plus another $24,000 to the Rhode Island Democratic Party. And guess who received $2,900 in campaign contributions from Michael Perik? My opponent, Seth Magaziner. Now Liz Beretta-Perik, the chair of the Rhode Island Democratic Party, has resigned. To be clear, Liz has not been charged with a crime, and Michael Perik has pleaded not guilty. But her resignation doesn't erase legitimate questions about political donations, influence, and accountability. Seth Magaziner once said, "No one should ever have to guess who their elected officials are working for." I agree, Seth. So let's ask the question. WHO ARE RHODE ISLAND'S POLITICIANS REALLY WORKING FOR? Rhode Islanders are struggling with high taxes, rising costs, and an economy that keeps falling behind. Meanwhile, politically connected individuals are making headlines for all the wrong reasons. We need transparency, accountability, and leadership that puts taxpayers ahead of political insiders.
