We visited Japan in May & I let my 4 & 5 year olds walk 3-4 blocks alone to family Mary to buy milk on their own. I would never even consider doing that in the U.S.

I do think that a part of it is that America is so big that a lot of the times schools are out of walking distance. Of course the safety here is a big problem.

In Norway, Oslo, they take subway trains buses by themselves.

It’s normal in Switzerland too and they start in kindergarten to go by themselves as soon as they feel confident enough.

I see to walk to school and bank home every day 2 km each way. It was normal in my country. The parents show you the way 2 times and than you go by yourself starting at the age of 7.
