Oom woke up three days after collapsing. The sterile white room was quiet, saved only by the rhythmic beep of the heart monitor. The moment her eyelids fluttered open and vision cleared, she didn't ask where she was or what had happened. She looked straight at her mother and Lingling, raspy voice cutting through the silence. "Where is Bam Saralee?" Oom eyes desperate and searching. "Is Bam here? Where is she, Mae?" Oom's mother and Lingling exchanged a panicked, pained glance, quickly stepping up to her bedside. "Oom, sweetie, you need to rest first," her mother said softly, gently stroking Oom's hair and completely avoiding the name. "The doctor said your pressure was way too high." "Mae, I asked about Bam!" Oom voice breaking as tears immediately pooled in her eyes. "Why aren't you answering me? Where is she? She was holding me right there when I collapsed! Is she outside? Please, Mae tell me, was I really married to her? Am I married? Where is my ring?" "Oom please, calm down," Lingling begged, own eyes brimming with tears. "You're shaking, Oom. Please, just drink some water first." "I don't want water, Ling! I want answers!" Oom sobbed, pulling her hand away from Lingling's touch, chest heaving. "Why is everyone hiding her from me? Was it all a lie? Am I really married to someone I can't even remember? Why does every single person in this room pretend she doesn't exist every time I say her name? What did you do to her? Where did she go?!" "Nobody did anything, darling," her mother wept softly, pressing a kiss to Oom's cold forehead. "We just want you to get better, Oom. Please, just focus on getting better." "How can I get better when every part of me feels missing?" Oom whispered, voice shattering into a fragile rasp. "She was right there, holding me, why did she leave me again?" Seeing them continuously divert every single question about Bam, something inside Oom quietly broke. The frantic searching in her eyes slowly dimmed into an empty void. From that moment on, Oom started talking less. She stopped asking about her test results, stopped asking when she could go home, and asked less about everything else. She barely touched her meals, pushing the hospital trays away after only a bite or two. Whenever anyone tried to strike up a conversation, Oom would simply look out the window, quietly requesting to be left alone. One afternoon, sitting up in her hospital bed, Oom looked down at her hands and spoke in a soft, barely audible murmur. "Ling, can you get me that frangipani tart? Or the Oreo cake from Saraya Pâtisserie?" Lingling paused, heart breaking for her, before giving a tight, apologetic smile. " I tried to go earlier, Oom. But Saraya is closed for the day. Closed for a while, actually." Oom just chuckled softly,a dry, empty sound devoid of any humor and nodded slowly. "Closed." Oom whispered to herself, tracing the seam of her blanket. "Of course it is." "Oom, I can get you something else? A different cake from another bakery?" Lingling offered gently. "No, it's fine," Oom leaning her head back against the pillow and closing her eyes, dismissing everyone in the room. "I'm just tired, Ling. I need to rest now. Please." The day she was finally discharged from the hospital, Oom didn't let anyone drive her home. The moment she got her car keys back, she drove straight to the familiar quiet alley where Saraya Pâtisserie stood. When she pulled up across the street, heart sank into her stomach. The grand building was completely dark. The windows were covered, the bright lights were extinguished, and metal padlock hung from the front doors. Refusing to give up, Oom drove frantically across town to Orm's flower shop, hands trembling against the steering wheel. But when she arrived, the shop was locked shut too. Desperate, breathing heavily as tears blurred her vision, Oom sped toward the quiet, winding streets she had memorized. She pulled up in front of the modest, elegant two-storey house. #oomeisaya #bamsaralee #oombam
