UNGA FLASHBACK | A VOICE FOR AFRICAN FREEDOM As world leaders gather once again in New York for the United Nations General Assembly, history takes us back to September 1985—when Mwalimu Julius K. Nyerere stood before the same Assembly for the final time as President of Tanzania. At a time when apartheid remained entrenched in South Africa and colonial rule still denied freedom to peoples across Southern Africa, Nyerere used the world’s most important diplomatic platform to speak with clarity and conviction. For Nyerere, the struggle against apartheid, colonialism and all forms of racial domination was not simply an African question. It was a question of justice, human dignity and the right of every people to determine their own destiny. His voice at the United Nations reflected Tanzania’s unwavering solidarity with Africa’s liberation movements—a commitment rooted in the belief that Africa could not be truly free while any part of the continent remained under colonial or racist rule. Today, as the UN General Assembly once again brings the world together, we revisit a moment when one African leader stood before the international community and spoke for a continent still fighting for its complete liberation.
