I’m a special education teacher and also follow her. You had a lot of great info. Students can have a 1:1 help however it’s not given by the college. It’s different than what students get from k-12. You must provide your own 1:1 help. I think there is a lot of misinformation regarding this. A difference of opinion should not be used to discredit a teacher. We should learn from each other and not try to tear each other down.

You cannot simply get an IEP because you want your child to have one there is a whole evaluation process. My son was evaluated and it was confirmed that he does have a delay but he was still denied services because he doesn't meet the DOE criteria they only recommended I look for a private service provider instead.

I just want to say that taken your IEP to college is more than just testing accommodation. I work at a CUNY College and we do have other ways of supporting students that have an IEP. It really depends on the college you go too. Also college students that don’t have IEP can also request being evaluated I can’t speak for all colleges, but I do know this is an option for CUNY .

I have a son who has had an iep since 1st grade and he is now in middle school. We have had the best luck with the plans that has changed throughout the years. We have removed things and added others that was needed. We added read aloud during testing because he understands things better than reading as he struggles a little with comprehension. We also added math in it so he can better understand the word problems; everyone agreed. His progress has been amazing 🥹

as a parent with a child with an IEP and i can say from experience what she is saying is not accurate!! it took me 2 yrs to get my son the correct services. they asked me thr parent my input what I saw were my son's weakness, but it took a team effort his teachers the DOE evaluation includeding a social worker and physiological evaluation as well ... they don't give them out so easily.. smh and your child must get re-evaluated each year or 2 years so they can update what your children pay need or no longer need & just hearing how you speak i can tell you definitely know what you are talking about... continue doing great work

Omg, thank you! I saw that video, and as someone who is a school social worker, you can’t just assume that if you ask for something to be put on an IEP, you’re automatically going to get it just because you’re the parent. These accommodations or services have to align with the data being presented. It’s also a whole team decision, with the district representative having the final say. Everything you stated is 100% true!

10000% agree I had to fight for my son for 2 years to get his iep. I’m still currently fighting for him to get one on one help in the classroom with the help of his teacher and the doe is still giving me a hard time about it. They don’t give it like candy it’s crazy 😭

I think we also need to take into account there ARE some parents that simply want their kids to have these accommodations just because… and not because the child actually needs it. I say this because my sister has gotten them for her kids when they don’t actually need it. And there are parents that KNOW how to work the system and those parents are able to get those IEP like it’s candy. It absolutely should only be given to kids that actually need it because there are some that truly need it.

i work with a teacher that literally always says there’s no IEPs after graduation!! it’s hard to hear but as educators and that is soo true we have to work on helping children becoming independent!!! yes they have needs and we have to make sure we provide those mandated accommodations however we have to teach the children how to navigate when they no longer have those accommodations that help them thrive.
