@pixelauratech: A weather balloon does not just float. It climbs straight toward space, carrying a tiny box of sensors that quietly measures the entire sky on the way up. That box is a radiosonde. Before launch, meteorologists calibrate it down to the smallest detail, checking temperature, humidity, pressure, and altitude readings against known values. Once the balloon is filled with helium or hydrogen and the winds check out, it is released and buoyancy takes over. As it rises, the radiosonde is already streaming data back to a ground station by radio, second by second. Here is the part most people never think about. As the balloon climbs, outside pressure drops so much that the balloon itself expands to several times its original size, until it bursts completely on its own. A small parachute then carries the instrument back down to Earth. A weather forecast you check in five seconds starts with a burst balloon 20 miles up.
