‼️Random rabbit hole/conspiracy theory I’ve been stuck on lately: has anyone else noticed how bizarre the textile cycle has become?
We used to have SO much more clothing made from cotton, linen, wool, silk, leather, etc., including pieces made well enough to survive for decades. Now huge amounts of used clothing from wealthier countries get exported overseas, where it gets sorted, resold, reused and sometimes recycled, while we turn around and continuously import mountains of new fast fashion that’s increasingly polyester, acrylic, nylon and other petroleum-based synthetics.
So we’re exporting existing textiles, including a lot of genuinely good natural-fiber clothing, while replacing our own wardrobes with cheaper plastic clothing that pills, sheds microfibers and doesn’t last nearly as long. Then when it falls apart, we buy it again. What a perfect consumption loop.
And then there’s the weird rabbit hole about fabrics themselves. Natural fibers absolutely have different physical properties: linen, cotton and wool interact with moisture, heat, static electricity, bacteria and our skin differently than polyester and other synthetics. There are also claims online about certain fabrics having specific “frequencies” or energetic effects on the human body. I haven’t found good scientific evidence establishing those frequency claims, so I’m not presenting that part as fact, but it definitely sent me down a rabbit hole about how dramatically the materials touching our bodies all day have changed.
I don’t even need the mystical explanation to find the whole thing strange. We took clothing that was often biodegradable, repairable and capable of lasting years, replaced a huge portion of it with petroleum-based disposable fashion, and somehow called that progress.
Anyway, that’s today’s conspiracy-theory rabbit hole. 😂 Start checking the fiber-content tags on your clothes. Once you notice how much of your closet is literally plastic, it’s hard to unsee it.‼️‼️‼️
