Jesus used one sentence to warn all those who follow Him: “Remember Lot’s wife.” (Luke 17:32, KJV) But have you ever wondered why Jesus specifically reminded people to remember Lot’s wife? Because hidden in her story is a danger that many followers of God can easily overlook. Why did Lot’s wife turn into a pillar of salt? Many people would say: because she looked back. But was the problem really just that she looked back? If it was only one physical action, why would Jesus later tell us to remember her? The real issue was not her eyes, but her heart. Her body was leaving Sodom, but her heart was still there. She missed the life she once had. She missed the comfort, the possessions, and the familiar world she was being called to leave behind. So the moment she looked back, it revealed not curiosity, but attachment. Why did Jesus say, “Remember Lot’s wife”? Because even today, many people say they follow God, but their hearts still long for the world. They want salvation, but they do not want to let go of what God is calling them to leave behind. They want a new life, but they still hold on to the old one. But we cannot keep looking back at the world while walking with God. The truth is this: The world promises pleasure, but it cannot give eternal life. The world offers comfort, but it cannot save your soul. When God calls us out of something, looking back can cost us more than we realize. So what Jesus truly wants us to remember is this: If God has already called us to leave something behind, why are we still holding on to it? What are people still holding on to?
