In Mesopotamian religion
The Anunnaki were a group of gods in Sumerian, Akkadian, and Babylonian belief. The name is usually read as something like "offspring of An" (An being the sky god). In early texts they're the major deities who decide fates, headed by An, Enlil, and Enki. Later, especially in Akkadian and Babylonian sources, the term often shifted to mean the gods of the underworld, who serve under its queen, Ereshkigal. Their role varies by period and text, so there's no single fixed list of members.
The "ancient aliens" version
Many people know the Anunnaki from Zecharia Sitchin's 1976 book The 12th Planet. He claimed they were extraterrestrials from a hidden planet called Nibiru who came to Earth for gold and genetically engineered humans as laborers. This idea spread widely through ancient-astronaut media and conspiracy circles.
Assyriologists reject it. Sitchin's translations of Sumerian and Akkadian are widely considered wrong, and no ancient text describes a planet Nibiru with that role, aliens, or genetic engineering. The actual texts describe gods in a familiar polytheistic system, such as creating humans from clay to relieve the gods of labor, which is a myth rather than a record of a visit.
