@phdtogo: Why is college writing so different from high school writing? One of the most frustrating parts of learning how to write college papers is realizing that some of the writing habits you were rewarded for in high school may be exactly what a college professor asks you to stop doing. And that doesn’t necessarily mean your high school teacher taught you “wrong.” You were learning to write for a particular situation. Maybe you were taught to start every essay with a broad attention-grabbing hook: “Throughout history…” or “Since the beginning of time…” Maybe you learned that every essay needs five paragraphs. Maybe your thesis statement always had to be the last sentence of the introduction. Maybe you were told never to use “I” in academic writing, never start a sentence with “because,” or that every paragraph needed a certain number of sentences. Then you get to college and suddenly a professor tells you to stop doing something you thought was a RULE. What changed? The writing situation did. College writing often asks you to make decisions based on the specific audience, purpose, genre, assignment, and academic discipline. The question becomes less “What is the rule for writing a paper?” and more “What does THIS piece of writing need to accomplish?” That transition from following writing formulas to making rhetorical choices is a big part of learning college-level academic writing. And professors don’t always do a great job of explaining that transition. So if you’ve ever gotten feedback on a college paper and thought, “Wait. I was literally TAUGHT to do that,” I want to hear it. What writing “rule” did you learn in high school that a college professor later told you to stop following? #CollegeWriting #AcademicWriting #CollegeEssay #WritingTips #ResearchPaper

What’s really frustrating is that sometimes professors will have their own weird and (in my opinion) bad rules for their own classes. I’m in grad school and there’s one professor who literally wants us to write “in this paper I will…” in the first paragraph and thinks that’s the best sign of a strong, well-defined thesis.

I was shocked at how MLA format was barely used. It would have been much more useful to have started APA citation in my Social Studies classes and the other methods for science and literature.

The 5 para essay is a fantastic foundation. Having taught students who did not learn this in HS, I think it is critical for college prep.

I don’t do hooks anymore and I find less teachers doing it especially the silly question ones.

I just wanna say I appreciate you saying "it was appropriate for the situation." I've encountered a lot of professionals who want to look from their specific niche endpoint and say "that's how we should've been teaching kids to write" ignoring that it's often necessary to teach in phases. It'd be like saying we're wasting time letting kids ride tricycles because it's not the same as the bike they'll have to ride later.

More classes than English should teach writing per their discipline in high school. MLA and rules for English classes/professions don’t apply for those science classes. But English teachers shouldn’t be solely responsible for teaching writing in all disciplines.

i will always defend the 5 paragraph method for high school students. I think it’s a great starting point. Students who want to do more, will; students who are pushed by their teachers to improve their writing, will; and those who are struggling have a consistent method. I didn’t use that writing style in my undergrad, but it was drilled into my head on how to organize my writing which was extremely beneficial

The life lesson is teachers get stuck on the power trip of arbitrary rules. You got a learn what is real and what is someone’s ego. Discern that in life and you will know which rules to break and which to not break.

I teach middle school and I don't teach them to write hooks. I hate some of the "helps" they teach in elementary like "I think this because" ... I spend all my time getting them to unlearn "writing about writing." so... I just don't teach writing crutches.

I HATE HOOKS!! I’m a HS Senior teacher and an adjunct professor. This is one of my biggest pet peeves. Every teacher in the HS teaches this way and it drives me crazy.

So many college professors are awful, hiding grades, changing formats, etc. learning the material is so much easier on your own

As a high school science teacher scientific writing is very hard for most students because it’s so different than English writing because it’s third person you don’t want the hook. It can be dry. It can be literal and students really struggle with this.

YES. most of my juniors (in a history class) start with "All throughout history....." and my response is always "how are you gonna cite that??" Shockingly though, they rarely have a thesis statement.

I teach 11th and 12th grade high school English, including AP language and AP literature, and I definitely tell them that their hooks need to be relevant and specialized to their topic. Out with, the cliché hooks!

And then when it changes they think their hs teachers taught them wrong. I try to always preface to my students to make sure you k know the expectations of the prof. In college and the hs writing I teach gives you a foundation to expand on at the next level.

I remember however I wrote in high school holding really well. The hook didn’t get rejected, but I did have to learn what the hook needed to look like for a given class. Did the paper need flowers and flavor or was it just a barebones well explained discussion bland diet? And the 2015 to 2019 college and even some recent online writing classes I took.

Last year as a junior in HS I took a dual credit English comp 1301 class and we completely relearned how to write essays. Before we were expected to have a hook and build our paragraphs based on our idea. Then in the college class we learned how to build body paragraphs first and formulate our thesis based on the evidence we gathered. It felt backwards at first, but it’s really the correct way to do it. Idk why they don’t teach that from the start.

High school teachers and students are experiencing a similar tension where the skills for a middle school context are no longer appropriate for the high school classroom.
