No one is saying parenting while your spouse works opposite shifts isn't exhausting or hard—it absolutely is. But there is a huge difference between solo parenting during a shift rotation and single motherhood. Being a single mom means having zero partner, zero second income, zero safety net, and bearing the full legal, financial, and physical weight of raising a child completely alone 365 days a year. I’m at home with my child 24/7, handle every appointment, and do every daily routine on my own—but because I am in a relationship, I would never claim the single mom experience, because having a partner and a two-income household inherently changes the reality. Solo parenting for two weeks is a scheduling challenge; single motherhood is a life structure. Conflating the two invalidates the unique legal and financial struggles actual single mothers face every day.

Night shift is definitely hard on a family, but calling yourself a “single mom” because your husband works nights is a little much. Try being a military spouse when your husband or wife deploys for 6–9 months at a time. No coming home in the morning. No switching off when their shift ends. No help with bedtime, sick kids, school, appointments, emergencies, or the million little things that happen every single day. You’re holding down the house, raising the kids, worrying about your spouse, and counting down the months until your family is whole again. THAT is a whole different kind of doing it alone. 🇺🇸

Single mom. Zero help. And he doesn’t even pay his little $60 a week on time. Constantly chasing it while I do everything for my son.

Hey! I’m totally not trying to dismiss your past or anything like that. I’m sorry this struck such a cord within you- I’m simply giving another perspective as so many single moms in your comments are trying to show you that being married and being a primary care taker of your children is different than being a single mom. Your situation is difficult for sure and I’d never intentionally dismiss that. It is surprising to me that with your past you aren’t more understanding of where people are coming from but truly it doesn’t matter to me (: you’re doing great regardless of how you want to label your situation.

I didn’t realize you had 4 kids before you and Pat together. I know you had three girls . I understand what you are saying about being single when he is at work.

I completely understood what you meant. You weren’t saying you were literally a single mom — you were saying that sometimes it feels that way when everything falls on you. I was a stay-at-home mom with two little ones only 20 months apart, and one of them had a life-threatening illness. My husband worked out of state because of his job and was only home about five days a month. So the kids, the house, doctor appointments, trips back and forth to Children’s Hospital two hours away, hospital stays, and everything else that came up fell on me. I was absolutely married, but there were plenty of times I said I felt like a single mom because, day to day, I was doing it all on my own. That doesn’t take anything away from actual single moms — it was simply describing what that season of life felt like. People are taking what you said way too far out of context instead of just understanding what you meant.

People are just not gonna understand there’s a lot of families like this. I was lucky to see my dad once a month on his job me and my husband we’re on different schedules when our kids were little it’s called being an adult and you got to do what you Gotta do for your family. Best of luck.💕🙏

Most people do understand the difference between them, that’s why they are telling you, you are solo parenting for 2 weeks. Not being a single mom. You still share a marital home, you still are a 2 person income family. And at the end of those 2 weeks, you still get help and relief from your husband while he’s home.
