Moses Matovu (19 June 1949 – 24 September 2026) was an absolute musical legend, widely considered the face of live band music in Uganda.The Founder: He was the co-founder and definitive leader of the iconic Afrigo Band, which was formed in 1975 and stands as Uganda’s longest-running and most celebrated musical group.The Writer & Instrumentalist: He was a prolific singer-songwriter, composer, master saxophonist, and flutist. He wrote and performed timeless Ugandan classics like "Nantongo," "Teri Mubi," and "Genda Osome".Five Decades of Excellence: Often affectionately called "Papa Moi," Matovu guided Ugandan music through nearly 50 years of shifting tastes and political turmoil, keeping live-band music vibrant and universally respected.Tragic Passing: His incredible journey came to a sudden end on September 24, 2026, when he tragically passed away at the age of 77 following a fatal confrontation in Kampala.
