Has the navy done away with 6 month deployments? My dad was gone for 6 months or more a lot when I was younger, so why are we acting like this is something they just started? And this was back in the time before cell phones and email so the only way to communicate with him for all those months was a hand written letter that then had to be mailed to the middle of the ocean and he was occasionally able to call us. These people now have the ability to be in constant contact with people back home so, while the situation isn’t ideal or fun, it’s what you signed up for.

People wanna complain about 40hrs a week….go do it 24/7 everyday for 10 months…and yes being medical is basically 24/7 12 on call 12 on duty 😒

while deployments this long are not the norm they are also not uncommon. And long deployments having a psychological effect isn’t new either. That’s always been a thing. I think the distinction here is that even when a ship is on long deployment they still make port calls. The Lincoln didn’t. Being at sea for that long is going to take a toll. Compare it to working 7 days a week 12 hour shifts for 8 months. Even when your not working you never get a break from work because your always at work. At no point should anyone, military or otherwise, have to go through that. And before you come at me about serving, I did. PO 3rd class GMG. I have 2 meds and a world under my belt and my shellback. Served during the 80’s.

It’s war , problem is they sign up for this job and out of 5,000 this is totally understandable, being a soldier isn’t for everyone because it’s hard back breaking work
