Please like, comment, and SHARE! 🙏 🔍 Episode Overview: On October 27, 2024, at about 9:56 p.m., officers Michael Bruno, Chang Han, and Theodore Christolias from the Palisades Park Police Department wrapped up another call on East Palisades Boulevard. As Christolias crossed the street to reach his patrol car, a white 2020 Hyundai Tucson swerved over the double yellow lines and almost hit him. He jumped into his car right away and pulled the driver over at 7th Street and East Palisades Boulevard. Christolias approached the Hyundai and met the driver, a 26-year-old woman named Jay Lee. While talking to her, he smelled alcohol and saw signs she might be impaired. Jay said she hadn't drunk any alcohol. Suspicious, he had her step out and do field sobriety tests. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. In that test, Christolias noticed her eyes lacked smooth tracking, showed clear shakes at the farthest point, and jerked before 45 degrees. Next came the Walk and Turn test. Jay missed touching heel to toe on steps, took the wrong number of steps, and turned the wrong way. The last test was the One Leg Stand. Jay didn't lift her foot right and dropped it too soon. Based on the alcohol smell, her poor test performance, and clear signs of impairment, officers arrested Jay for driving under the influence. They towed her car for a required 12-hour hold under John's Law. Christolias first took her to the Leonia Police Department to process the case. He read her the standard statement for drivers, and she agreed to give breath samples. After watching her for 20 minutes, she blew into the machine. The Alcotest showed her blood alcohol level at 0.12 percent, over the 0.08 percent limit. Once the test ended, they drove her back to the Palisades Park Police Department to finish up. After completing the paperwork and issuing tickets, they let Jay go to her friend. She signed the liability warning before her court date. Christolias gave her these tickets: operating under the influence (39:4-50), careless driving (39:4-97), failure to yield to a pedestrian (39:4-36), driving an unregistered vehicle (39:3-4), and not staying in marked lanes (39:4-88). Court files show that on March 6, 2025, Jay pleaded guilty to driving under the influence. The careless driving charge dropped to failing to follow traffic signals (39:4-120.9). For the guilty plea, she installed an ignition interlock for three months, attended 12 hours at a drunk driver center, and paid $930 in fines. The judge dismissed the other three tickets in the deal.
