paying for dates does nothing to keep women safe at all. it can be a form of love bombing as well, and it's definitely objectifying for men as well.

I think if you asked women most would agree with Scott because it benefits them

Men’s peak fertility age is the same as women’s though. They are fertile longer but not great fertility. Older men (even with a very young woman) are more likely to have birth defects, miscarriages etc because the sperm are low quality

When I first started dating my husband, I was making $12/hr and he made 6 figures. Yeah, he paid. 💅🏼

The last time I was single I was 18 and always paid for myself because I was scared to “owe” a man something. If I was single now, I think I’d let them pick up the first bill because I’m more confident and value generosity in a partner.

Yeah, no. I don’t want to be beholden to any guy. I appreciate the gesture, but in most situations, it feels safer to go dutch. Also, wouldn’t you rather be kissed because I wanted to kiss you, not because you paid for it?? If a guy doesn’t care about the difference, he would not be the guy for me.

I assumed by “downside” he meant that he wasn’t going to get her over the finish line, so to speak.

I’ve always said that unless it’s otherwise discussed, the person who did the asking-out is the person who pays.

I rather pay for myself when dealing with men . I generally rather pay my for myself, but when I date women I’m more likely to let her if she wants to because I’ve never had women make me feel like I owe her something.’ cause she bought me a meal.

It is just safer to pay for myself. I don’t want any indebtedness.

If you want a trad wife, you pay. If you want a trophy wife, you pay dearly. If you want a partnership, equality, a smart woman, you go Dutch. If you want a woman who adores you, sees your value, loves you, and is a true unicorn, she pays.

Paying for myself takes away the transactional undertones of the guy paying, and it liberates me to order what I want and empowers me to feel in control of my own situation. Why would any woman not want that? Food is not that expensive!

when I asked my (at the time 16yo) teenage son about this "who should pay" debate, he said that ...."the man should pay because all he's risking is being used for a free meal, & the woman is risking her life"...... this was after he learned that woman text their friends before dates to let them know who to look at if they turn up missing the next day. He had single aunts & godmothers & it bothered him to think about that.....
needless to say I'm very proud of him...

I’m curious to hear your opinions on the idea of sharing costs as two individuals grow closer, and become more committed to, and comfortable with each other. With your perspectives on whom should pay in the beginning leaning towards men, I’d really like to understand if those ideas change as a couple become closer. Do you think it should become more equal? Should it remain the same? Or are your perspective different entirely? Personally, I’m of the opinion that most definitely as partners become closer the sharing of costs ought to even out in a manner suitable for both involved. But that’s just my view. Where do you, or anyone else for that matter, sit??

When I was dating I always found guys who absolutely insisted on paying despite my protests a real turn off. I was fine with a man paying for a first date if he asked me out though. This man’s argument ventures too close to owing a man sex for paying for the date for my comfort.

Made less than my now hubby when we were dating. I paid sometimes despite this. It is a power imbalance if nothing else is a reaason to sometimes pay. I may not have treated to the bigger items/events but I did pay my share as it made me feel better

My problem with the conversation around whether a woman should pay or not is that we’ve framed a woman paying her fair share or going Dutch or whatever as being independent and equal while doing nothing to actually change the social power dynamic, wage gap, or unequal emotional and domestic labour thus making women have to pay money to prove they are equal partners while still not being treated as an equal partner

I’ve always paid my own way. Not only is it automatic protection against the meal=gratuity option, but when men get angry when I insist, it’s a heads up for me.

I always liked the idea that whoever asks pays. A date is an invitation. I would never extend an invite, and then ask you to cover your own share.

VDIGFY | NOTEBOOKS :
1. Paying creates some sort of contract it is easier to feel safe and pay for yourself. 2. The idea that my life costs more so I shouldn’t pay for dinner affirms that I should be expected to spend the money on the heels, the skincare, the salon trip etc. when realistically a fun date at a rock climbing wall in sneakers and a pony tail should be equal to the event. 3. As a big sister, I always advise my loved males that they shouldn’t pay for a cent before a year. Dates should be full of deep connection, whimsy and creativity. Their money is for their future homes, their retirement, their baby funds, etc. not the trial and error period of life. There is integrity in someone who appreciates the handmade, the secure attachment, the detail orientated. Life is measured in effort. It is their responsibility to both be that person and be for the person.
