this is better. he doesnt know what the hell toothless needs or wants but he still knows becuase theyre connected. reminding us that the 'dragon master' is just a regular guy who has no tricks up his sleeve just such deep empathy and therefore understanding to dragons because he simply has such a pure heart is really important in todays representation of protagonists.

I used to read the books and try to learn dragonese from the ‘How to Speak Dragonese’ volume but I forgot it 😞

I think he still does but dragonese is presented differently in the films. like he understands the dragons and they understand him. which is why he was the only person able to bond with a dragon, same with his mum

As much as I think it's so cool for Hiccup to speak Dragonese as this would make it easier for Hiccup to communicate with dragons, I think the decision for him to not know how to speak it in the animated films is still a perfect choice. What I observed is that in the books although Book Toothless is whiny, selfish and stuff, Hiccup being an emphatic person and one who can speak Dragonese, still has the advantage of being able to know what Toothless wants or needs. Movie and Series Hiccup can't speak Dragonese, and take into consideration that in the First movie Toothless was introduced to us as a Wild Dragon and not to mention being the most dangerous dragon there is, this tests Hiccup's empathy to the limits because of the language barrier, further making it difficult for Hiccup to determine what Toothless thinks, wants or needs. With this story direction, Hiccup being able to earn Toothless' respect and trust without Speaking Dragonese, but by Patience and open-mindedness to willingly try to understand Toothless' mannerism and body language, I would say seeing that progression of bonding together felt more rewarding and further emphasis the "Actions speaks louder than words" quote. With this story direction being implemented in the Film by not making Hiccup know how to speak Dragonese further proves how special Hiccup and Toothless' bond as the story progresses. And the idea of these two that despite having family of their own, Hiccup and Toothless being considered 'Soulmates' really goes to show how good their relationship is being developed.
