Jetset Jo :
I think the biggest problem with Forgotten Island was the marketing. There was very little of it, and what I did see focused almost entirely on the Philippines, Filipino food, culture, and setting rather than the heart of the story.
As a Filipino, I’m thrilled to see our culture represented so beautifully. But by marketing it primarily as a “Filipino” movie, they may have unintentionally made people with no connection to the Philippines think it wasn’t for them.
I just watched it, and it’s beautiful. At its core, it’s about friendship, cherishing the memories and people who shaped us, and learning that moving forward doesn’t mean leaving those memories behind. That’s deeply human and relatable regardless of your age or background.
Mulan, Coco, and Moana are rooted in specific cultures, but audiences understood that their stories were universal. I wish Forgotten Island had been given the same chance. The culture is part of what makes it special, but the humanity is what makes it for everyone.
