@okuapehene.palace: AKUAPEM & AKYEM ABUAKWA: A SHARED HISTORY The historic relationship between Akuapeman and Akyem Abuakwa is deeply rooted in the formation of the Akuapem State. In the early 18th century, communities on the Akuapem Ridge sought the support of Akyem forces in their resistance against Akwamu domination. Following the defeat of Akwamu, the Abotakyi Accord of 1733 helped establish a new political order that brought together Guan, Kyerepong and Akan/Akyem elements. This historic relationship contributed significantly to the development of Akuapem’s traditional leadership and the establishment of Akropong as the seat of the Okuapehene. The story of Akuapem and Akyem Abuakwa is therefore one of alliance, shared history, traditional ties and enduring cultural connections. As we celebrate 200 Years of Odwira, we honour not only the traditions of today, but the generations and relationships that helped shape Akuapeman.
