My niece is 21 and has DS. We did not know she would be born with DS and we knew nothing about it. After she was born, my brother did not bring her out right away like he did with his other kids. When he finally came out, he was alone and it was just him and I in the hospital hallway. The look on his face and I knew something was wrong. He told me they thought she had DS and he broke down. It was the first time in my life that I fell to my knees and cried out to God because we didn’t know what having DS meant. I stayed at the hospital with my sister-in-law for 4 days. God gave me a peace that my niece was going to be okay and she was our family’s angel. I bought a pillow for her saying “you are our angel.” And that turned out to be so true. She is the heart and joy of our family. She is a mess and loves to joke and pick at me. She can bring a smile to our face on our worst days and we wouldn’t trade who she is for anything because she is perfect!!!
