But if you have a house and everything with the kids it’s hard to leave. You divorce and your children’s lifestyle changes with that. Imagine your children go from living in a house and now since the divorce living in a one bedroom apartment with one of the parents. It’s sad

Dr. Melanie - Psychologist :
As a psychologist, I want to acknowledge the parent who feels torn because every option seems to carry a loss. Loving your children doesn’t make this decision simple, and struggling with it doesn’t mean you’re failing them. There’s room to consider their needs and your wellbeing together, with support and without shame. You deserve more than pressure to “just stay” or “just leave.” 🤍 I share gentle reflections on relationships and self-trust on my page, too.

yeah so….. as a child of divorced parents I have to disagree. i’m sure in some I situations when the divorced parents end up mentally healthy and get along, that’s great. but that’s rarely ever the case. my relationships were so messed up because of the divorced. I would have been WAYYYY better off having both of my parents staying together even if they didn’t talk much. it was crucial to also have my dad there and for them to have SOME form of communication. I don’t remember their relationship, sure but I got a piece of both of my parents when they were together and yeah. things would have been much better. i’m forever messed up in many years of therapy because of their divorce.

I stayed for the kids, but not for the reasons you would think. I stayed until they were old enough to choose if they wanted to spend time or talk to him, and so they didnt have to visit him without me.

This is a take from a man who has probably never been financially dependent on anyone in his life. Being a stay at home mom and being financially stuck is definitely a reason people are staying in the relationships for the kids.

Absolutely true! I heard someone say at a very young age, “It’s better to come from a divorce home, then to live in a divorce home.”

I get the answer would be different if you actually polled children of divorce. The separation anxiety and abandonment issues that can emerge from divorce are far more damaging than listening to arguing. Arguments end, living apart from a parent at all times is forever.

Every A&E intervention starts with the adult saying it all started when my parents got divorced 😳

My parents both divorced when I was a baby but they never spoke ill about each other. Never freaked out to me about what the other did. Didn’t care if I talked about them to each other and just explained to me they just fell out of love and were ready to move on. It sucked not having two parents together but it also showed me that it’s okay to admit it’s not working anymore and be respectful about it.

Kind of crazy because he also talks about how damaging a divorce is on kids.

I stayed too long and use the excuse of staying dor the kids. I see how doing has impacted how they navigate their own relationships. I apologize all the time, now I have to help them unlearn what I taught them was ok.

I left when I realized I didn’t want my daughter to see how terrible her dad treated me. But after I divorced him she just continued to be exposed to his behavior, just with another woman. I have guilt for that.

As a child of divorce, who had the expenses of divorce paid for via his college fund, and made me move to a state with horrible education thus stunting my education and job prospects further - yeah, if you have kids, you owe it to them to be the world's greatest actors for 18 years.

I tried…. 30 year marriage, a 25-year-old and a 15 year-old …..the 25-year-old wanted me to leave a long time ago. I stayed for the 15 year-old. I had a lawyer last week long overdue.😳
