THE 19TH JUNE, 1983 ABORTIVE COUP ATTEMPT IN GHANA. The 19th June 1983 abortive coup attempt was an unsuccessful attempt to overthrow the Provisional National Defence Council (PNDC) government headed by Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings. On that fateful day, some of the dissident soldiers including Lance Corporal Carlos Halidu Gyiwah and Sergeant Abdul Malik had been based in Togo after earlier failed plots. They entered Ghana and coordinated actions with people inside the country. Rebels broke prisoners out of detention facilities in Accra and Nsawam and temporarily took control of the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) facilities. A broadcast was made claiming that the PNDC government had been overthrown. Loyal PNDC forces, led by officers including Captain Courage Quashigah, regained control after several hours, and the coup attempt failed. The 19th June, 1983 coup attempt occurred because there was considerable political and economic tension in Ghana at the time. Most Ghanaians who were in Nigeria have deported back to Ghana under the operation "Ghana-must-Go". Opposition to the J. J. Rawlings led PNDC government came from different groups, including military dissidents and political opponents. The PNDC was also facing serious economic difficulties, including the effects of drought and declining economic conditions followed by the Ghanaians deportees from Nigeria in 1983. The failed coup led to increased security measures and political repression by the PNDC. The government became more suspicious of groups it considered potential opponents. Some people associated with the attempted coup were arrested, tried, or subsequently punished. The 19th June, 1983 abortive coup attempt is significant because it was described in contemporary accounts as one of the most serious attempts to overthrow J. J. Rawlings' PNDC government. The failure allowed the PNDC to remain in power and strengthened its determination to defend the regime against further coup attempts by tightening its Defense. #fyp #fyppppppppppppppppppppppp #ghanatiktokers🇬🇭🇬🇭🇬🇭 #ghanahistory #goviral
