Manipulation is when someone blames you for how you reacted to their toxic behavior, while completely ignoring the disrespect that pushed you to that point. They focus on your reaction so they never have to take responsibility for their actions. Suddenly, the conversation becomes about your anger, your tone, or the way you responded — instead of what they did to hurt you in the first place. Yes, we are responsible for how we react. But accountability should go both ways. Don’t let someone erase what they did by making your reaction the entire story. Sometimes, your reaction isn’t where the story began.
