I’m a community college history instructor, so I do want to plug the benefits of a two year path whether trade school is the end result or not. This does connect with the the valuable message Mendoza is offering, I promise. Taking general education courses at a community or state college builds a broad foundation of knowledge and practical life skills that will serve young people no matter what career path they end up choosing. Critical thinking, communication skills, self discovery, and building habits of continuous learning help people navigate challenges throughout their life. Most people are not going to choose to be a history teacher, but the classes I teach are about developing arguments supported by evidence. What Mendoza is proposing, and what I am stating here, are all essential to creating informed citizens in a volatile world. Thank you for this post as I’m going to send it to my students.

i took a financial literacy class in high school and it quite literally changed my life! i advocate for it everywhere but a lot of high school kids won’t take the class bc it’s “boring” 🥲 love that he is doing this

I'm so sick of people saying things like personal finance and cooking should be taught in high school. That's not the purpose of school, there's value learning in the core courses. at home that people are dropping the ball on those life skills, a school can't do everything and it shouldn't be expected to. most schools offer cooking and finance as electives, which is where they belong

I’ve always felt like each franchise should have economic advisors available to their players, that can advise the young men without looking to profit off of them. It’d be such a small investment for the franchises, but one that could be huge for the young men that’s probably never had real money.
