There is a fort from the Civil War under the Golden Gate that you can visit too. Pretty cool.

A slight clarification: the camp (camp reynolds) and the cannons are really pointed right at the golden gate (the waterway, not the bridge which did not exist). I’m sure they could be turned if needed onto San Francisco, but the whole fort was really established to control the bay. Any ships, southern, pirates, etc that tried to come through the golden gates had cannons lined up directly in their path. Controlling the bay made taking San Francisco was pretty worthless.

I stayed there in middle school over night for a field trip! We dressed up in costume and it was hilarious. Kinda creepy to stay in that building in the barracks! But also super immersive and interesting!

They used to fire those cannons on tours of Angel Island with a fake ball. I don’t know if they still do that. I grew up sailing with my grandparents over there allll the time. It’s a beautiful island.

& there were Camels taken to LA during this time as part of the Union Troops that were stationed there. It was an experiment to see if camels would be useful to troops in the US (ps they were’t). The head of troops in LA was a union general married to a southern woman. He asked to be stationed in LA so he wouldn’t have to fight his wife’s people.

Angel Island was a concentration camp during the war with Japan any Asian looking person was rounded up there

The first CA governor Peter Barnett tried to ban all Black people from the state. The transcontinental railroad only came in 1869.
