Maybe I’m hearing this wrong, so help me understand. Why does it have to be called “confrontational”?
I’m watching two Black women with big platforms agree that we should teach our kids to be confrontational with adults, and I’m struggling with that message.
Our community already has enough problems with communication, anger, disrespect, and people not knowing how to disagree without everything becoming a confrontation. Why would we purposely teach our children confrontation instead of teaching them how to communicate, set boundaries, and respectfully stand up for themselves?
If an adult is making a child uncomfortable, touching them inappropriately, disrespecting them, or asking them to do something wrong—ABSOLUTELY teach that child to say NO, speak up, and tell somebody.
But if we’re talking about a child saying, “No, I’m not cleaning up,” “No, I’m not washing the dishes,” or “No, I’m not doing what you told me to do,” simply because they don’t want to—that’s completely different.
Maybe I’m missing the point y’all are trying to make, but teaching boundaries and teaching confrontation are NOT the same thing. I would rather teach our kids how to respectfully communicate and stand firm than teach them that every disagreement with an adult needs to become a confrontation.
