This month, people started calling to boycott the farmer-owned cheese brand Tillamook over a halal label on its packaging. Viral posts treated the small Certified Halal mark, which just means the food meets Islamic dietary rules, as a sign the cheese had changed. One even named it after a terrorist group. Brigitte Gabriel, founder of ACT for America, which the Southern Poverty Law Center lists as an anti-Muslim hate group, posted that corporations keep groveling to Islam and that non-Muslims are now forced to eat food made to Muslim standards. But nothing changed. Tillamook says it switched in 2016 to a vegetarian rennet, the enzyme that turns milk into cheese, that's certified halal, so anyone who's bought most of its cheeses since has been eating the same thing. That type of rennet is common too, with enzyme makers estimating in 2008 that 80 to 90 percent of cheese made in the US used it. No one is forced to buy it, and this boycott quite literally makes no sense, since the label just makes their food more accessible, like any brand should. So it appears to be about religion, not cheese, and plenty of people have pushed back calling it Islamophobic.
