@c5news: Scotland Police’s “biggest and most co-ordinated” operation ever carried out has targeted a Vietnamese organised crime group linked to human trafficking and cannabis farms. Around 300 officers were deployed to simultaneous early morning raids on Wednesday, which led to 36 arrests and the discovery of 14 cannabis farms. Police estimate that the cannabis seized was worth around £3 million. Glasgow was the main target with 19 raids, but a total of 47 properties were searched across Birmingham and various Scottish regions, including Edinburgh, Dundee, and Aberdeen. Code-named Operation Kendrew, the crackdown targets a network said to be mainly run by people from Vietnam, alongside members from other Southeast Asian countries, operating across the UK. The force came to light about the network after authorities uncovered 150 cannabis farms in Scotland last year, amounting to £26 million in drugs. Police Scotland allege the gang is involved in what it called "poly-criminality," including drug cultivation, and is under investigation for human trafficking, fraud, forced labour, immigration crime, and money laundering. A number of potential trafficking victims were recovered from several of the addresses during the raids. Detective Superintendent Stevie Bertram, head of Police Scotland’s national human trafficking unit, said officers believe the raid will "absolutely cripple" the group’s ability to function. "The industry of trafficking people has become so sophisticated that it often goes unnoticed," Bertram added, noting that Vietnamese nationals remain the highest demographic exploited in Scotland. "We wanted to do it all in one day and I think it's been a huge success."
