@officialmariozelaya: SFU has a new sign and a new name. Written in a language that “settlers” made for them, using a written alphabet that never existed in the 1800s. Why? First Nations had no written alphabet or formal writing system. They relied on storytelling, songs, and pictographs to preserve and pass down history and culture. So why are we doing this today? #sfu #bc #newsign

As a linguist and speech-language pathologist, I think that including visual signage of an indigenous language that’s native to the land is a positive thing. Yes, their language was not necessarily written, but the International Phonetic Alphabet or North American IPA is a way to represent all the sounds in any language. English can also be transcribed in IPA Or NAPA… The English alphabet doesn’t include indigenous language sounds. It has to be written with diacritics. I actually don’t see the big deal of having signage in local indigenous languages plus English/french. a visual representation of indigenous language is a good thing imo. There aren’t even many fluent speakers in the languages, so it’s a way of preservation for our indigenous peoples… English/french + traditional indigenous languages 👍

You’re 💯 percent right. I know someone who works for the provincial government studying language. He told me they often just guess and make up the alphabet for the language. I’m sure no one will ever know the true cost to tax payers

English was also oral only. Them a written version was created. Should we have never named shit? your statement is a logical fallacy.
