I love Zendaya, truly truly do, but they should've had a dark skin woman in the movie instead of a biracial one. They had no problem making her brother dark skin but when it comes to the sister it's a light skin woman. That's another reason most people didn't grasp why their relationship wasn't allowed, she was damn near the same color as him.

That's why Zendaya's character says "There are doors that we can't walk through" in the song 'Rewrite the Stars'. She LITERALLY wasn't allowed to enter certain spaces because she's black.

I thought it was specifically because she’s bi-racial, which is also why she and her brother were in the circus as “oddities”. Yes the stigma was because of racism against black people, but also she was getting it from both sides because she wasn’t fully black either.
