To those who do not know the story of South Yemen: before you judge, learn the history.
Before 1990, Yemen was two separate states: the Yemen Arab Republic in the North and the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen in the South, each with its own institutions, military, and political system.
In 1990, the two states united, and many people in the South hoped this would be a partnership based on equality and justice. But tensions quickly grew, eventually leading to the 1994 civil war. After the war, the South experienced years of political and military marginalization, land disputes, exclusion, arrests, and other grievances.
Out of these grievances emerged the Southern Movement in 2007. For many of its supporters, its demands evolved from calls for rights and equality toward the restoration of the southern state and the right of its people to determine their own political future.
Today, more than three decades after unification, the Southern Question remains unresolved. It cannot simply be reduced to the word “separatism.” It is connected to history, identity, rights, and the political aspirations of a people who had their own state and political experience.
So before judging the people of the South, listen to their voice and learn their history.
Raising the southern flag or calling for self-determination does not make someone an enemy of Yemen or of the Arab world.
Peaceful protest and demanding political rights are not crimes.
People may disagree about Yemen’s future:
Should Yemen remain united?
Should it become a federal state?
Or should the South restore its own independent state?
Whatever the answer, this question should be decided through dialogue and political choice—not force or repression.
And if you do not know what happened to the people of the South after unification, please do not judge based on assumptions. Research the grievances and abuses that Southerners experienced after 1990, read from different sources, and then form your own opinion.
Real peace does not begin by silencing the South.
It begins by listening to it and respecting its right to speak about its future.
