this may be completely unrelated, but I'm a taxonomist, and I feel this way when a new species discovery gets into headlines, like the new feline species, and people are like "scientists are so dumb, they say they discovered something when natives already knew about it" but it was a local scientist who was the primary author?? And yes, native and indigenous people typically know about species before scientists do, but that doesn't mean that there isn't any value to describing species for legal and conversation purposes. It just eliminates all the work that researchers do worldwide when studying biodiversity
