The thing I picked up on in your last video was the comments about whether the stars look comfortable or happy. Teaching kids to read facial expressions and body language is hard. Hats off to you for finding an ingenious way to do that!

And representation! Kids can see themselves, or see people like their friends in the contestants and pros. Ezra, Sarah Jane and Hailey (or Jojo and Jenna), Brandon and Chandler Kinney being the first black couple to make it to the finals a few seasons back. Also seeing people like Olympians (the best of the best) STILL try new things!!

Not to mention media literacy! And learning how to critique without venom! Noticing all the extra details like fog and costume and music and how it makes you feel is exactly the kind of thing we’d try to encourage when teaching art critique. This is all so good

I love this “why” so much! Plus—1) practice giving feedback in a kind or productive way, 2) learning new vocab (I think it was “genuine” in the original video, 3) using evidence in a group discussion!

No word of a lie one of the reasons I got into DWTS as an adult was because it was so refreshing and inspiring to see successful adults be vulnerable and go out of their comfort zone!

love this. plus as a loner kid without a lot of social interactions and not in social circles, I missed out on a lot of pop culture and it still leaves me out today

Things like this are very impactful. I had a teacher in 4th grade and he would often yap like crazy about stuff he was passionate about. And one day he mentioned Glee (at the time season 2 was airing) and he mentioned how important it is for kids our age to see stories like Kurt’s and Mercedes’. And I was hooked because of this. This show later helped me realize I was gay, and also taught me how to understand the lives of people that I don’t relate to.

This is why I love Dancing With The Stars and why I don’t generally connect with or vote for “ringers.” Thanks for sharing this!

Do you show the troupe and opening numbers? I’m assuming you don’t have time but they are incredible

This is amazing! It also gives them opportunities to learn new vocabulary in addition to critical thinking skills. So much fun! Side note: you have such beautiful eyes! Can't wait for next week😊

Last year I was a long term sub for a 6th grade class and we watched dance clips on Wednesdays and I didn’t even try to make it educational because they have 3 different teachers all assigning loads of work and homework and I decided half of class on Wednesday was gonna be a nice break in the middle of the week and if they weren’t interested then that time could be used as a study hall to catch up on work because we expect way more of the kids in school now than what was expected of us when we were in school

That’s a very interesting way to show them that and you are right (as you know) about how much they put themselves out there always. Do you show them who they are like an athlete if they had won medals or something so they know why are they famous?

This. This is why I love watching DWTS w/ my students (10 years). There are so many lessons- resilience, culture, determination, music, and so much more 🩷🩷

genuine question because i would love to do something similar in my classroom one day! how do you handle showing the dances and songs that are more adult? ik not all kids are gonna pick up on sexual lyrics or grinding in a rumba lol, but i still worry about them modeling behaviors that they probably shouldn’t. how do you decide what (if any) content to skip? thanks!!!

I think this is such a good lesson opportunity and I am so glad you are exposing them to dance, who the people are, learning how to overcome scary challenges, it’s so great!!
