Pitṛ Pakṣa is a sacred period dedicated to remembering, honouring and offering prayers for our departed ancestors. Begin your prayers with: “Oṁ Namo Bhagavate Vāsudevāya” 🙏🏽 The tilāñjali/tarpaṇa water offerings may be performed for 1, 3, 5 or more days during Pitṛ Pakṣa. Other offerings, including food and piṇḍa, may be made on the final day of your observance. If you are only able to perform the offering on one day, Sarva Pitṛ Amāvasyā, the final Amāvasyā of Pitṛ Pakṣa, is traditionally considered an especially appropriate day for remembering and making offerings to the ancestors. 🌿 Preparation: Choose a clean and peaceful area and place or plant kuśa grass there if available. 💧 Simple Tarpaṇa Facing South — for the Pitṛs/Ancestors Offer the water through the area between the thumb and index finger: Oṁ Sarva Kula Pitṛ Tarpaṇaṁ Mayā Dīyate Tava Upatiṣṭhatām or simply: Oṁ Sarva Kula Pitṛ Tṛpyatām 🌅 Facing East — for the Devas Offer water through the fingertips: Oṁ Sarva Devāya Tṛpyatām 🕉️ Facing North — for the Ṛṣis Offer water through the centre/side of the palm near the base of the little finger: Oṁ Sarva Ṛṣibhyo Tṛpyatām 🍚 Piṇḍa Offering You may also prepare a simple piṇḍa using: Ground rice • ground urad dal • black sesame seeds • ghee • honey • milk While offering Pinda: Oṁ Sarva Kula Pitṛ Piṇḍa Dānaṁ Mayā Dīyate Tava Upatiṣṭhatām 🍛 Food Offering Offer simple vegetarian food together with water, milk or juice. Sprinkle a small amount of black sesame seed (kālā til) over the offering. Chant: Oṁ Sarva Kula Pitṛ Bhojanaṁ Mayā Dīyate Tava Upatiṣṭhatām 🪔 You may also light a dīyā, offer incense and flowers, and pray to Lord Krishna for peace, blessings and spiritual upliftment for your ancestors. The most important part of Pitṛ Pakṣa is śraddhā — sincerity, remembrance, gratitude and devotion. 🙏🏽 May our ancestors be satisfied, blessed and at peace.
