They’re throwing at much higher velocity than before. When Pat Burrell won the Series, Jamie Moyer was a lefty who worked with location and being “crafty.” No one is like that these days.

100% right, pitchers used to throw 250-325 innings with less injuries. Middle relief is the most important position on the team. If pitchers went longer, they could keep more position players on the roster

With technology in the dugots, the 3rd time around the lineup is where guys start getting banged up. Teams try to avoid that by removing the starter after 5ish. Way tougher to hit a fresh arm with diff arm angles and movement than the starter who you’ve seen twice already and maybe fouled off a few or just missed one in a prior at bat which builds confidence in the box. It’s technically smarter for the team to prevent runs, however it makes for a Far less interesting watch and noticeably less offense

Because teams want the power guy throwing 100+ there are no pitchers that are crafty, change speeds, etc. Even when you roll a bullpen guy out it’s fastball after fastball. Give us 6 of your best innings and then hope and pray the bullpen gets you by to the end. No more Maddox, glavine, Carlton, Jaime Moyer.

Its because it starts in High School or even before that. Then college, then minors. None of these guys have ever thrown that much and aren’t used to it. Let them throw. They are babied all the way through.

They start pitching for three teams at nine years old. Arm is probably shot by the time they get to the major leagues.
