It's pretty crucial for how Charles engages with the world that he's a rich white guy who has a basically invisible but exceptionally powerful mutant power. If anything a much more apt critique of the metaphor in regards to Charles would be how often writers don't really consider, or outright remove, his disability (although to be fair, he is in a perfect position to never have his disability compel him towards more radical politics)

the only race I could see Magneto being is Romani, not just because I am but because they were also targets of the Holocaust. they also can be very pale in skin tone if you want to keep that aspect. however, given that the MCU has dodged making Wanda, Pietro, and probably Doom Romani... we're never going to get that.

there’s multiple marvel characters whose background is their privilege. i’ve had this debate about angel, not professor x or magneto, but i feel like an important bit of angel’s character is that he would’ve been a bigoted conservative white man if he hadn’t been a mutant. he was literally a spoiled trust fund baby until he became a minority himself. it’s a good metaphor for minority groups that one can join at any time, like disabled folks. you can be able bodied for years then BOOM you get in an accident, you develop a chronic disease, etc. not every oppressed class is oppressed from birth and i like having a parallel for that, and a parallel for unlearning biases that you grew up with.

And honestly, the same thing applies to Magneto. Not only is entertaining the idea of using horrifying events like card decks inherently stupid and immoral, but Magneto, and some brotherhood/acolyte members by extent directly contrast the privilege that Xavier and the OG 5 represent. Or more precisely, the privilege that Charles gives to Scott, Hank, Jean, Bobby, and Warren. The Maximoffs were all subjected to prejudice long before their powers awakened, but they don’t have privilege of being found by Xavier. Magneto is the one that finds them out because of him seeing them and of just a mutant.

1000% agree. I agree just as much with Magneto. He could be race-swapped if they find a great actor, but his origin needs to be of the Holocaust. Imo the only reason that people think Rwanda or other genocides/tragedies would work is simply because of the timeframe rather than the specific context of those real-world events. The Holocaust has some real specific traumas and consqeuences that result in specific character motivations; you can't just swap that over to Rwanda simply because Rwanda was in the 90s and it makes the timeline cleaner

I make the argument that in current time I feel like Professor X not being white and being a person of color can still work with the common idea that poc ain’t always good supporter of their community and there’s many that sell out others for their own comfort. He’s resentment and wanting to be accepted in a way that in the norm is a common thing among people of color that align to whiteness. Intersectionality still applies since there non white people that only advocate justice if it fit being acceptable to society. Him being rich is crucial though

Magneto can’t be African American too, he must be a survivor of a genocide. Now that’s not to say he couldn’t be black, it would be interesting to see a version of him that was a survivor of the Rwandan genocide or even a black survivor of the holocaust, bc black people were also victims.

Charles is a man of privilege who resents being a minority. He's a rich, white, ostensibly straight man who hates being in a wheelchair. He desperately wants mutants to assimilate to the status quo so that he can assume his "rightful" position at the top of the social hierarchy. -- It could be argued that this is why all of his X-Men recruits can pass as normal humans. He had to give Nightcrawler an image inducer to make him pass and he was upset when he chose to stop using it. Also, Charles *somehow* didn't notice a whole village worth of Morlocks living directly beneath NYC-- likely because they're not photogenic and presentable. -- His dream of mutant/human coexistence is a nice dream, but it's motivated by a certain level of self-hatred from a white man who doesn't want to be a minority anymore.

I think honestly the reason why Charles is so white is because he reads as someone who comprehends oppression, but does not understand what its like to oppressed for something completely unhidable and so distinct in the "you cant just become this". He can hide being a mutant, he can hide being gay, and 90% of the most common experiences as a disabled man in this country he avoids because his wealth and access surpasses it.
