@vic.mellor: Yesterday the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing called "Standing Up for Women in Sports." Ten Democrats sit on that committee. One of them, Dick Durbin, came in, read an opening statement saying the topic was a distraction from what voters actually care about, and left. The other nine never showed up at all. Not one Democrat asked a witness a single question. The witnesses had flown in to answer them. Kim Jones, who co-founded the Independent Council on Women's Sport. Carly Smolak, who played professional soccer. They talked to an empty half of the room. Senator Katie Britt said it plainly: not one member on the other side of the aisle had the respect for women to come in and ask questions. Here's the part that sticks with me. Durbin's stated reason was that this is a distraction from cost of living. He's right that cost of living is the number one thing on people's minds. I've spent the last month on electric bills that jumped 21 percent and hospital bills nobody in this state can read, and I'll be back on it tomorrow. But that is not a reason to walk out. A United States Senator can sit through a two hour hearing and still care what groceries cost. Those two things have never been in conflict for one second. Showing up is the job. All of it is the job. If you think a hearing is the wrong subject, you say so from your chair, with the witnesses in front of you, and then you ask them a question anyway.
