I don’t like tipping culture, because you should pay people a liveable wage!

Tipping is weird. People should get a fair wage. That’s it.

It's not arrogant to want workers to ask their employers for the pay they feel they need to be paid. Counting on the general public to close the gap moves the working class nowhere.

The 15-20% job is delivering your food and making sure your drinks are refilled. If my waitress makes it special or we have a connection expect upwards of 30-50%. Isn’t that common restaurant etiquette?

I am pro tipping culture. We take cash and give it to each other and keep it out of the hands of the elite? Yes please. And everyone has to tip, if a super wealthy person doesn’t tip they are looked down on. Going out to eat is a luxury, and for 2 hours you get to be a boss of sorts and pay the person helping you. The same logic people use to not tip is the SAME LOGIC wealthy people use to not pay workers : “why should I pay for unskilled labor?” “I put the risk in, I deserve the reward”. People who don’t tip for some kind of “ethical” reason would just become bosses who don’t pay if they were rich.

Where I live (in Canada) minimum wage is $15/hour — and there’s no lower minimum wage for workers that earn tips. Because servers make at least $15/hour before tips, restaurants and bars have adjusted their prices to account for their wages. Is $15/hour enough to live comfortably on? No, it isn’t, especially when you factor in that many servers aren’t scheduled for full-time hours. But given that they’re making the same minimum wage as many other people working jobs without tips, I can’t help but feel like adding another 15-25% on top of prices that are already inflated is just too much. I want to support working class people and believe everyone should earn enough to live comfortably, it’s just that with inflation/shrinkflation and the enshitification of most things it’s gotten to the point where it’s getting harder and harder to make ends meet for myself, let alone improve the lives of others. But you’re right… this argument is almost always framed in such a way that pits working class people against each other, and that isn’t productive

Alaska doesn’t have the server wage, but tend to tip really well. It’s crazy to not tip in the US.

You are basically saying that working people should stand together by providing for eachother while the billionaire class exploits us all. And the few if us who oppose by denying to follow their instructions are the ones who are not loyal to our class. Do you really think it helps the server more if I stop buying the coffee because I'm broke than if I stop tipping because I oppose the system? You shall all be broke and happy?

If I can’t afford to leave at minimum a $10 tip no matter my total (usually $30-40), I don’t eat out.

I got a dui in my early 20s and as a person with a bachelors degree and big girl job at the time I took my vacation time to serve my 10 days in jail as a consequence of said dui. I was in general population where most of the women were either SWs, marijuana users or accused petty financial crimes. Many of them knew each other and lived on the same side of town. Most of them victims of poverty.
