@the.legal.np: A patient went in for cataract surgery and never came home. Now the anesthesiologist, Dr. Michael Urban, has been indicted on charges of reckless manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in Bart Writer’s death. The case raises a difficult question: when does an alleged failure to monitor a patient cross the line from medical malpractice into a criminal case? An indictment is an accusation, not a conviction. Dr. Urban is presumed innocent unless proven guilty. #medicalmalpractice #legalnp #opthalmology #crna #anesthesiologist
27 year CRNA. That’s just sad. I have never turned off my monitor sounds. If they turn up the music I turn up the monitor. Nor do I give fentanyl for cataract surgery as they give numbing eye drops.

As a former PACU nurse who left to go back to ICU, I know this is a hot take but the OR can, in my opinion, be too lax sometimes. The music, the games etc. the arrogance of anesthesia and the fear of embarrassment or shame in admitting a patient was improperly or over sedated can be their own worst enemy. It was not the environment for me but I know this happens at a LOT of facilities in the OR.

CRNA here 🤦♀️would need to see the anesthesia record but it sounds as though his anesthesiologist was grossly negligent. Airway, airway, airway, why was the airway not managed??

This is exactly why you do not want an anesthesiologist doing your anesthesia. CRNA every time!!!

as a sedation nurse this is insane. vitals are continuously monitored closely!! even if the vitals volume was down there should've been some flashy lights!

My problem with physician owned self standing surgery sites are twofold. #1: they DO NOT have the exact same reporting requirements to CMS for same procedures done within a hospital setting, &, #2: physician owned are most times owned by surgeons & that takes the sense of obligation to patient first away from anesthesia. How do I know this? I suffered 2 strokes following a bilateral TKA after being SENT HOME following the procedure. I’m an ICU nurse who lost a full year after this. I trusted this surgeon. Unfortunately their locum anesthesia group bows to surgery &, viola, a set up for patients to literally fall between the cracks. My CVA was not a reportable event from a self standing surgery center.

Were the alarms silenced so they could play music bingo?

Immediate jail. The hubris to tell nurses not to do CPR and call 911 is diabolical

Retired RN from cardiovascular OR. This is insane! There was so much negligence-the RN in the room is there as a patient advocate. This puts a knot in my stomach.

I’ve worked with people who either silence monitors or turn the pulse ox tone down, heck I even know one who doesn’t monitor end tidal for endos.

As a CRNA I run a tight freaking ship in my room I’m in. I have no problem with ppl enjoying music or whatever but if anything becomes a pt safety concern. Woof. Watch out. So much is wrong with this case. I’m so sorry to the family 🥺
