@jasmineforok: The girls are fighting 😭 but here are the facts because this rabbit hole is WILD. In 2021, Oklahoma passed SB 959, changing how vacancies in our U.S. Senate seats are handled. The Senate author? Lonnie Paxton. Kyle Hilbert carried it in the House. Fast-forward to 2026: Alan Armstrong and Kevin Hern are now disputing who gets to occupy Oklahoma’s Senate seat between certification of the November election and January. And who is now asking Oklahoma’s Attorney General for clarification about how these vacancy laws work together? Lonnie Paxton. The Senate author of SB 959. 😭 To be fair, the legal question involves how multiple Oklahoma statutes interact… not simply Paxton forgetting what he wrote. But you cannot tell me the irony isn’t IRONYING. And here’s another piece of history worth knowing: when Paxton advocated for SB 959 in 2021, he said the legislation would avoid an expensive special election, keep Oklahoma fully represented in the Senate, and prevent a temporary appointee from receiving an unfair incumbency advantage. He also specifically mentioned the importance of filling vacancies because the U.S. Senate was 50/50 at the time. Now we’re back here five years later, with another Senate vacancy and another conversation about Senate balance and exactly when Oklahoma’s elected successor gets the seat. The statute says “the candidate elected” becomes eligible to assume the office upon official certification. Keyword: ELECTED. Anyway… the girls are fighting, I read the statute, and now I have even MORE questions. 😂 📚 SB 959 (2021) read it for yourself.
