If the line is curved inward in the vertical plane, but you look at it directly from above, the top-view projection can appear as a straight line because the curvature is in the height/depth direction, not side-to-side.

the earth isnt round or flat its more of an oblong ovaish with huge valleys and peaks its only due to the water that it appears to be round but since water level is flat it can be treated like a straight path under the water but not above.
