I loathed this book. I read it, agreed that it was an accurate description of a certain kind of person, and never found that description funny. It's just sad and unsurprising. It's Don Quixote without whimsy or charm. I think people process the recognition of the character with a sense of relief that somebody else noticed this kind of person, and that relief approximates humor because it's surrounded with references they don't know that create a sense of novelty. Foucalt's Pendulum is better and funnier in a similar vein.

This is my favorite book ever. Absolutely genius. The story behind it is even better. I own one of the 2500 first edition copies signed by his mother. Some of these chapters are off the charts funny. Kennedy Toole was an amazing talent unfortunately mental instability took him away from us too soon. Ignatius is absurd, frightening and just plain hysterical. The letter to the owner of levy pants is magical.

Proof of Life :
Ignatius needs to be effete and early 20s. It should be a breakout role for an unknown, not a vanity project. I always thought of him as closeted or asexual with no self awareness. the side characters are also elite. New Orleans in the early 1960s should be the star.
